Also in the top five richest in the latest list are Gautam Adani of the Adani Group ($74.8 billion or £55 billion), Shiv Nadar of HCL technologies ($31 billion or £22.8 billion), Radhakrishan Damani of Avenue Supermarts ($29.4 billion or £21.6 billion) and Cyrus Poonawalla of Serum Institute ($19 billion or £13.9 billion). Poonawalla replaced Ashok Leyland owners Hinduja brothers this year. The latter have slumped to the 15th position this year with assets of $14 billion (£10.2 billion).

This year’s list saw a number of new entrants. Savitri Jindal found herself back into the top 10 with assets of $18 billion (£13.2 billion). Four pharma billionaires on the list in 2021 saw their wealth going down.

The list, which includes foreign citizens with business, residential or other ties to India or citizens who don’t stay in the country but have key business or other ties to the country, was prepared using shareholding and financial information received from individuals, families, stock exchanges, analysts and the country’s regulator agencies as of September 17.
