Nitish Kumar, the mercurial chief minister of the eastern Indian state of Bihar, on Tuesday (9) resigned from his post and submitted his resignation letter to state governor Phagu Chahuan.
Kumar, who leads the Janata Dal (United) or JD(U), also submitted a support letter of 160 lawmakers to stake claim to form a new government. He was set to take oath as the chief minister on Wednesday (10).
“All MPs and MLAs are at a consensus that we should leave the NDA (National Democratic Alliance),” Kumar reportedly told Chauhan after submitting his resignation.

Twitter amused as Nitish Kumar changes partner yet again
Speaking to reporters after putting in his papers in state capital Patna, Kumar said the decision to leave the NDA was taken by the JD(U).
The 71-year-old leader, who tied up with the BJP after leaving the Grand Alliance comprising the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and other non-BJP parties in 2017, left for the residence of the RJD leadership to hold talks with party supremo Tejashwi Yadav, who is likely to become the deputy chief minister in the new coalition government.
It was over a fallout with Yadav that Kumar had ended his party’s involvement with the Grand Alliance five years ago and joined the BJP’s hands.
Earlier, JD(U) parliamentary board president Upendra Kushwaha congratulated Kumar for “assuming leadership of a new coalition in a new form”.
In a tweet, he said, “March ahead Nitish ji. The country is waiting for you,” Kushwaha added in the tweet.
Also, Rohini Yadav, RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter, had shared a tweet confirming the renewal of ties between Kumar and Yadav, two top guns of Bihar politics.
“Get ready for the coronation, those with the lantern are set to return,” Rohini Yadav tweeted along with a video amid a separate meeting of the legislators of the Grand Alliance.
