In a disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves through Kolkata, a 24-year-old law student has accused an alumnus and two current students of raping her on the campus of her college. The survivor’s detailed complaint describes a harrowing sequence of events that began with her suffering a panic attack and ended in a brutal assault.
The case has reignited concerns about campus safety and sparked political controversy due to the alleged links of the main accused to the ruling Trinamool Congress party.
Sequence of Events: From Panic Attack to Assault
According to the survivor’s complaint, the events unfolded on Wednesday (25). She was on campus for a political meeting and was preparing to leave when Monojit Mishra, an alumnus and the main accused, asked her to stay back. When she refused his advances and resisted, she began to experience a panic attack, struggling to breathe.
She pleaded with the accused to take her to a hospital or at least get her an inhaler. One of the co-accused, Zaib Ahmed, left to buy an inhaler, which she used to gain some relief.

Despite her attempts to leave, she found the main gate locked and the security guard unwilling or unable to help. The two co-accused, Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, then forcibly took her to another room on campus. The survivor recounted that she begged Mishra to let her go, even touching his feet in desperation, but her pleas were ignored.
The Assault and Threats
Inside the room, Monojit Mishra allegedly undressed and raped her while the co-accused recorded the act on video. The survivor claimed that Mishra used the videos to blackmail and threaten her, warning that he would kill her boyfriend and have her parents arrested if she resisted or spoke out.
Despite her resistance and attempts to fight back, including suffering a head injury and being threatened with a hockey stick, the assault continued.
Aftermath and Evidence
Following the assault, Mishra threatened the survivor to remain silent. She managed to leave the campus, called her father, and was picked up soon after. The survivor’s account is supported by CCTV footage showing her being dragged by the accused to the scene of the crime.
Additionally, local media have confirmed that Zaib Ahmed purchased an inhaler from a nearby pharmacy at the time mentioned in the complaint, corroborating a crucial detail of her statement.

Political Fallout and Public Outcry
The case has put the Trinamool Congress government under intense scrutiny, particularly because of Monojit Mishra’s alleged connections to the ruling party. While party leaders have promised strict action regardless of political affiliations, opposition parties have accused the government of enabling such crimes through political patronage.
The incident comes less than a year after the brutal rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, further intensifying public anger and demands for improved campus safety and justice for survivors.
Ongoing Investigation
The police are continuing their investigation, and the survivor’s statement, along with supporting evidence, is expected to play a crucial role in the prosecution. The case has reignited debates around women’s safety, the role of political connections in shielding accused individuals, and the urgent need for systemic reforms to protect students on campuses across India.
