Indian prime minister Narendra Modi’s office on Thursday (20) said he would launch a drive this weekend to hand out government jobs to one million people, starting with 75,000 immediate appointments, as his government faces criticism of widespread unemployment, Reuters reported.
Joblessness in the second most-populous country of 1.4 billion has stayed around seven per cent for months — something that the opposition has regularly pointed out ahead of elections in several states starting in November and before the next general elections in 2024.
Modi’s office said the 75,000 new recruits would join 38 ministries or departments of the his government at various levels of seniority.
“As per the directions of the prime minister, all ministries and departments are working towards filling up existing vacancies against sanctioned posts in mission mode,” it said.
