An Air India flight from Mumbai to Newark had to return soon after takeoff on Wednesday (22) due to a suspected technical problem. The airline said the flight, numbered AI191, made a safe 'air return' and landed back in Mumbai.
“The crew of flight AI191 operating from Mumbai to Newark on 22 October made a precautionary air return to Mumbai due to a suspected technical issue,” Air India said in a statement.
After landing, the aircraft was taken out of service for inspection and maintenance checks. Because of this, both the AI191 flight from Mumbai and its return flight AI144 from Newark were cancelled.
Air India arranged hotel stays and alternate flights for affected passengers in Mumbai. The airline also said passengers in Newark were informed of the cancellation and were being helped with new travel arrangements as soon as possible.
