In a bid to a grand renaissance under the Tata Group, Air India is inching closer to placing landmark orders for 500 jetliners worth tens of billions of dollars from both giants Airbus and Boeing, Reuters reported citing industry sources.
The orders, according to the sources, include 400 narrow-body planes and 100 or more wide-body ones, including many Airbus 350s and Boeing 787s and 777s. The sources, however, said this on the condition of anonymity since finishing touches were underway on the mega deal.
It was reported that such a mammoth transaction could top $100 billion dollars at list prices, including any options, and rank among the biggest by a single airline in volume terms, eclipsing a combined order featuring 460 Airbus and Boeing jets from American Airlines more than 10 years ago.
The potential mega order comes days after Tata unveiled its decision to merge Air India with Vistara, a joint-venture with Singapore Airlines, to set up a bigger full-service carrier and boost its presence in both domestic and international markets.
The deal makes Tata 218 aircraft-fleet strong and Air India as the country’s largest international carrier and second largest in the domestic market after IndiGo.
While Airbus and Boeing declined to comment on the matter, Air India also did not respond to a Reuters’ request for a comment.
