Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has said he is extremely proud of the work done in his recent film Nishaanchi. The crime drama, released in two parts, tells the story of twin brothers Babloo and Dabloo, both played by Aaishvary Thackeray, whose lives cross paths amid family conflicts in Kanpur.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Anurag spoke about the hard work that went into making the film, especially the special effects used to show the double role.

He also compared the film’s visual effects to the Hollywood movie Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler.
Talking about changing filmmaking styles, Anurag said, “Working with other filmmakers, I am seeing this new style of working. It is coming in and it is everywhere in South. They shoot and they edit right there… They shoot a scene a day; they don't do shots."
He then explained how carefully Nishaanchi was made. “For me, both parts of Nishaanchi, with special effects, with the actor playing two different kind of a double role- which I am very proud of, what Sylvester and Red Chillies has achieved. I can very proudly say that it is better than Sinners. They are really two different people and we shot two months apart. It was not like change your shirt and come. It was all real.”
The film required detailed planning because the same actor had to play two completely different characters. According to Anurag, the two roles were shot two months apart to ensure authenticity. He emphasized that the transformation was not simple or cosmetic, but carefully executed with strong technical support.
Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan in double roles as twin brothers. The film received major recognition and made history at the 98th Academy Awards with 16 nominations. Michael B. Jordan also received his first Oscar nomination for his performance.
Despite the global praise for Sinners, Anurag believes the technical achievement in Nishaanchi stands strong in comparison.
Meanwhile, Anurag is preparing for the release of his next film, Kennedy. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023 and received a seven-minute standing ovation. It was also screened at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne and the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.
After facing delays due to production issues, Kennedy, starring Rahul Bhat and Sunny Leone, is now set to release on Zee5 on February 20.
With Nishaanchi, Anurag Kashyap says he has pushed creative and technical limits, and he stands proudly by the effort his team delivered.
