A picture that says a lot

Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey have sparked talk of a revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park With George with a single Instagram post.

The “Wicked” co-stars shared a joint photo of themselves sitting in front of Georges Seurat’s painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte — the artwork that inspired the musical. Bailey captioned it, “All it has to be is good,” a line taken from the show’s title song.

The post quickly fueled speculation that the pair are preparing to lead a new version of the musical.

Rumors that started last month

The hints follow a report from Deadline last month that said Grande and Bailey were considering a revival of Sunday in the Park With George. The most recent major production ran on Broadway in 2017, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford.

The musical first opened in 1984 with Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters. It went on to win both the Tony Award and the Pulitzer Prize.

A story told in two generations

The show is split into two acts, with the same performers playing different roles in each.

The first act follows George, a fictional version of painter Georges Seurat, as he works obsessively on his famous painting, supported by his muse, Dot.

The second act jumps forward in time to George’s great-grandson, also named George, a modern artist preparing an exhibition with help from his grandmother, Marie.

London in 2027?

According to Deadline, the revival is expected to open in 2027 at London’s Barbican Theatre. There has been no official confirmation, and the venue has not commented publicly.

The timing lines up with Grande and Bailey’s recent work together in Jon M. Chu’s two-part Wicked film series, where they play Glinda and Fiyero.

A tease from Grande

In a recent interview, Grande hinted that a major announcement was coming soon.

“I can’t say much yet, but it’s something that inspires me deeply. It contains multitudes,” she said, adding that she would share details as soon as it became public.

If the Instagram post is any sign, fans may not have long to wait.
