Avatar trailer leaks after exclusive cinema debut

James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, the next instalment in the Avatar franchise, is already creating buzz after its trailer was leaked online. The trailer had been exclusively screened in theatres with Fantastic Four: First Steps, but unauthorised versions quickly surfaced across social media platforms, prompting takedown efforts.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney attached the trailer exclusively to cinema showings of Fantastic Four, but multiple online copies were soon shared widely, echoing previous leaks like that of The Odyssey ahead of Jurassic Park Rebirth.

New threats and returning characters on Pandora

Set once again on the alien moon of Pandora, Avatar: Fire and Ash follows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and their Na'vi family as they confront a new enemy. The trailer teases the arrival of two new tribal groups — the Wind Traders and the Ash People.

According to early descriptions, the trailer features scenes of large-scale aerial battles, hand-to-hand combat within cosmic volcanic environments, and rising tension between the clans. Colonel Miles Quaritch also returns in the new instalment.

In one scene, Jake Sully warns Neytiri:

“We cannot live like this,” before being taken into captivity.

Fan reaction builds online

Despite Disney’s efforts to remove the leaked trailer, fan commentary and excitement have continued to grow online. Viewers who managed to catch a glimpse described the visuals as stunning and emotionally charged.

One fan wrote,

“The trailer has some of the most beautiful footage I’ve seen all year… huge aerial battles, heroes terrified, fist fights inside of cosmic volcanoes.”

Another added,

“It started out as ‘meh, more of the same’ and ended with ‘yup, another billion to James Cameron.’”

First look at new antagonist revealed

Days before the trailer leak, the filmmakers had officially unveiled a first look at Avatar: Fire and Ash, including the introduction of Varang, a new antagonist in the series. Disney shared promotional material encouraging fans to see the full trailer in theatres.

“Meet Varang in Avatar: Fire and Ash. Be among the first to watch the trailer, exclusively in theatres this weekend with The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” the studio posted.

Release date confirmed

Avatar: Fire and Ash is scheduled to be released in cinemas on 19 December 2025. The film continues James Cameron’s ambitious exploration of the Avatar universe, with further sequels already in development.
