Fans demand release after India’s World Cup victory
After the Indian women’s cricket team’s spectacular win at the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, fans are calling for the release of Chakda ’Xpress, the long-awaited biopic based on legendary cricketer Jhulan Goswami. The film, starring Anushka Sharma, was completed in 2022 but remains unreleased due to reported creative and budget-related differences.
The timing of India’s victory has renewed interest in the project, with many suggesting it would be a fitting moment to showcase Jhulan’s inspiring journey on screen.
Why Chakda ’Xpress was delayed
According to a Mid-Day report, the delay stems from concerns raised by Netflix executives over the final cut of the film. They were reportedly dissatisfied with the film’s tone and structure. Budget overruns also added to the challenges, leading to repeated postponements of the release.
The project, produced by Clean Slate Filmz, was one of Netflix India’s most anticipated sports dramas. However, the streaming giant has yet to lock a release date despite the film being ready for over two years.
Makers appeal to Netflix
In light of the renewed interest following the national team’s victory, the makers of Chakda ’Xpress have reportedly written to Netflix executives urging them to “rise above the conflict” and bring the film to audiences. “The story of a legend like Jhulan must reach viewers,” the team said in their letter, emphasizing the film’s cultural significance and its celebration of women in sports.
Anushka’s comeback after years away from the screen
Chakda ’Xpress marks Anushka Sharma’s first acting role since Zero (2018). In recent years, she has largely stepped back from films to focus on family life with her husband, cricketer Virat Kohli.
The couple, who relocated to London in 2024 with their children Vamika and Akaay, have maintained a low profile. Despite her break, Anushka has continued to support film projects as a producer and has made occasional appearances in India for work commitments.
