In a shocking incident, an 11-year-old student of a government-run school in Delhi has allegedly been gangraped by two senior students in the toilet washroom and the police have launched an investigation.
According to reports, the incident happened in July but came to light only on Thursday (6) after it was taken up by the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW).
The rights body has sought an inquiry into the role of the school authorities into the alleged rape. The police have registered a case but no arrests were made yet.
DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal said in a statement on Wednesday (5) that the girl, had alleged that she collided with the two boys — both high-school students at the same school while she was going to her classroom. She said that she apologised to the boys but yet they abused her and took her inside a toilet where they locked the door and allegedly raped her, the statement added.
Maliwal also said that the girl accused the school authorities of “covering up the matter”, the BBC reported. She said that she had told a teacher about the incident but was told that the boys had been expelled.
“It is very unfortunate that even schools are unsafe for children in the capital,” Maliwal was quoted as saying.
The DCW chairperson said the role of school authorities must also be probed and police must take action against “the school teacher and any other staff” who did not care to report the alleged assault.
The school counter-alleged that the girl did not report the incident to the principal, but ordered an investigation.
The police said they had registered a complaint under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, and launched an investigation.
They were also questioning teachers and the suspected students.
