Ed Gale, the actor who brought to life some of pop culture’s most unforgettable characters, including Howard the Duck and Chucky in the Child’s Play franchise, has died at the age of 61. He passed away on Tuesday (27) in Los Angeles, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in cult cinema and television.
Born in Plainwell, Michigan, Ed Gale moved to California at just 20 years old with only $41 and a dream. That leap of faith led to a prolific career in Hollywood, where he starred in over 130 movies, television shows, and commercials. His first major break came when he wore the suit in Howard the Duck (1986), a film that, despite mixed reviews, went on to become a cult favorite.

Gale’s career-defining role came soon after, as he stepped into the eerie shoes of Chucky, the possessed doll with the soul of a serial killer, in Child’s Play 2 and Bride of Chucky. His performance gave the terrifying toy a visceral, lifelike presence that haunted audiences and earned him a dedicated fan following.
His niece, Kayse Gale, confirmed his death with a heartfelt tribute on Facebook. “It is with a heavy heart and a surprisingly light coffin (see what I did there?) that we announce the sudden passing of our uncle, Ed Gale,” she wrote.
Recalling his unique humor and colorful personality, she added, “Ed hitched a ride to California when he was twenty years old, with $41 and a dream, and he never looked back. He lit up the silver screens in cult classics and never stopped bragging about it. Ever.”
Gale’s diverse roles included playing the dinosaur Tasha in the 1991 TV series Land of the Lost, a carnival performer on My Name Is Earl, and a key character in the film Tiptoes alongside Matthew McConaughey. He also appeared in Oh Brother, Where Art Thou, Baywatch, 3rd Rock From the Sun, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, and Friday the 13th: The Series.
Despite his fame, Gale remained grounded, often attending fan conventions where he was loved for his candid stories and magnetic presence. His niece described him as a “fun uncle” who shared his passion for Hollywood with his family, remembered fondly for his laugh, storytelling skills, and even his knack for cheating at cribbage.
“Ed loved 7-Eleven hotdogs with disgusting amounts of ketchup,” she joked. “He hated Bill Maher for no good reason and had one hell of a laugh. Rest in love, you cranky bastard.”
Ed Gale’s remarkable career and vivid personality made him a standout in every room he entered and every screen he graced. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of fans and peers alike — but his legacy in cult cinema and beloved characters will live on.
