Mumbai Indians (MI) seamer Issy Wong on Friday (24) made history by becoming the first bowler of Women’s Premier League (WPL) to take a hat-trick. Her feat was registered against UP Warriorz who MI thumped by 72 runs in the eliminator at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai to make the final of the tournament’s inaugural edition.

Mumbai will take on Delhi Capitals in the title clash on Sunday (26).

Wong, who is of Chinese descent, broke the backbone of Warriorz’s batting in the 13th over when she dismissed Kiran Navgire (43), Simran Sheikh (0) and Sophie Ecclestone (0) to jeopardise the opponents’ chase of 183 for win in 20 overs. The Warriorz slumped from 84 for 4 to 84 for 7 and it was all over for their dreams of making the final. Wong also took the wicket of Warriorz captain Alyssa Healy to finish with 4 for 15 in four overs and Warriorz were all out for 110 in 17.4 overs.

Earlier, MI posted their challenging 180-plus total after Warriorz won the toss and elected to field. Nat-Sciver Brunt top scored for Mumbai with 72 not out in just 38 balls.

The 20-year-old Wong made her international debut for England in 2022 and has appeared in just one Test, three one-day internationals and nine T20 internationals, taking 14 wickets in all.
