Sequel confirmed at Godzilla Day event
Toho has officially named the follow-up to its acclaimed 2023 film Godzilla Minus One. The sequel, revealed during Godzilla Day celebrations in Tokyo on November 3, will be titled Godzilla Minus Zero. A monochrome logo served as the first look at the project.
The announcement follows the global success of Godzilla Minus One, which earned awards recognition and revitalized Toho’s classic kaiju storytelling for a new generation.
Yamazaki returns after an award-winning success
Writer-director Takashi Yamazaki will once again lead the film, and will also continue as visual effects supervisor — the same dual role that helped the previous movie outshine many big-budget Hollywood titles during the 2024 awards season.
Godzilla Minus One was a grounded post-war reimagining of the 1954 original, set after Japan's defeat in World War II and centred on former kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima. Yamazaki’s approach contrasted sharply with the more satirical tone of 2016’s Shin Godzilla.

No plot details yet, but plenty to build on
Toho has not shared story details for Godzilla Minus Zero. Filming is expected to increase later this year in Norway and New Zealand.
The previous film ended on a cliffhanger, with Godzilla beginning to regenerate after seemingly being destroyed. Shikishima’s partner also survived a brutal attack, hinting at lasting effects from the monster’s power — threads likely to factor into the sequel.
Timed release avoids Hollywood clash
Toho plans to release Godzilla Minus Zero in late 2026. The timing aligns with its agreement with Legendary Pictures, which prevents overlapping Godzilla films. Legendary’s Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is scheduled for 2027.
