Hetal Doshi, an Indian American lawyer with nearly 20 years of legal experience, recently announced her candidacy for Colorado Attorney General. Doshi has previously served as an Assistant Attorney General and later Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Antitrust Division in Colorado. The election, scheduled for November 3, 2026, has already attracted a competitive field, including five Democrats, among whom Doshi is running, and one Republican candidate.
Strong legal background and public service
Doshi’s career spans significant roles in the Department of Justice (DOJ), where she has prosecuted cases against monopolies, cartels, fraudsters, and political corruption. She has led high-profile antitrust cases against major corporations such as Google, Apple, and Ticketmaster, tackling corporate power and protecting consumers. Doshi's work also includes fighting fraud linked to the Great Recession, combating hate crimes and extremist threats in Colorado, and holding global investment banks accountable.
She highlights her dedication to justice, stating on her campaign website that she has managed teams of over 800 public servants in landmark cases, underscoring her leadership and impact in the legal field.
Motivated by personal and community values
Doshi is a first-generation immigrant, daughter of Indian parents, and attributes much of her motivation to the immigrant experience and the sacrifices made by her family. She seeks to ensure public safety, economic fairness, and protection of civil rights in Colorado. “For over a decade at the U.S. Department of Justice, I took on bullies, cheats, and crooks to protect working families,” she wrote in a recent Facebook post. “Now, the threats to our democratic values and economic opportunities are striking closer to home than ever before. States are on the front lines of this fight, and I’m running for Attorney General to keep fighting and winning here in Colorado.”
Opposing threats to democracy
Doshi has been vocal against policies and rhetoric perceived as politicizing the justice system. In a post responding to then-President Trump’s opposition to mail-in ballots, Doshi wrote, “Colorado’s democracy isn’t negotiable,” affirming her commitment to protecting free and fair elections in the state. Her stance aligns with a broader defense of democratic institutions and the rule of law.
Endorsements and campaign progress
On August 21, 2025, the Indian American Impact Fund, a political action committee supporting South Asian candidates, endorsed Doshi for Colorado Attorney General. Chintan Patel, executive director of the organization, called Doshi “the proven fighter Coloradans need,” praising her record of standing up against corruption and corporate abuse while delivering results for ordinary people.
Doshi expressed her deep honor at receiving the endorsement and reiterated her commitment to fighting for the highest ideals of justice and opportunity.
Competitive political landscape
Doshi faces strong competition in the Democratic primary from prominent candidates including Boulder District Attorney Michael Dougherty, former state House Speaker Crisanta Duran, and Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold. The primary date is yet to be announced but is expected in 2026.
If elected, Hetal Doshi would become Colorado’s first South Asian Attorney General, a milestone highlighting the growing diversity in American politics. With her extensive legal background and commitment to fairness, Doshi aims to bring strong leadership to Colorado’s top legal office, focusing on protecting communities, ensuring a just economy, and safeguarding civil liberties.
