India has summoned Bangladesh's top diplomat in New Delhi to protest what it called a deteriorating security situation around its diplomatic mission in Dhaka, following demonstrations that sought to march toward the Indian High Commission.
India's foreign ministry said Wednesday (17) it conveyed its concerns to Bangladeshi envoy Riaz Hamidullah, citing the actions of what it described as 'extremist elements' near Indian diplomatic facilities.
“We expect the interim government to ensure the safety of Indian missions and posts in Bangladesh in keeping with its diplomatic obligations,” the ministry said.
The move follows protests in Bangladesh calling for the repatriation of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in exile in India since she was ousted from power last year after student-led demonstrations. Bangladeshi police blocked protestors from reaching the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.
Bangladesh has not yet responded publicly to India's protest. Earlier this week, Dhaka summoned India's envoy to object to what is described as 'incendiary statements' allegedly made by Hasina from Indian soil, accusing her of attempting to influence the country’s upcoming elections.
Bangladesh is scheduled to hold national elections on February 12 under an interim government led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, who took office after Hasina fled to India in August 2024.
Relations between the two countries have deteriorated since Hasina’s departure. Dhaka has repeatedly sought her extradition to face trial over allegations related to a deadly crackdown on protesters, charges she has denied.
India has rejected Bangladesh’s accusations and said it opposes what it called a 'false narrative' surrounding recent unrest. New Delhi also said the interim government has not shared sufficient evidence related to the incidents.
Political tensions in Bangladesh have intensified in recent weeks, with multiple protests reported ahead of the vote. Earlier this week, India temporarily closed its visa application center in Dhaka, citing security and operational concerns.
