TWO people were arrested on Thursday (23) for allegedly attacking Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami and wife Samyabrata Ray in Mumbai.

Officials said the incident happened on their way back home from the studios on Thursday morning.

“‘Two people have been arrested for attacking Arnab Goswami and his wife. The FIR has been registered at the NM Joshi Marg Police station under Sections 341 and 504 of the Indian Penal Code,’ Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Zone 3, Avinash Kumar said.

The alleged incident took place after Goswami’s controversial comments about Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the context of the Palghar lynching incident in which two Hindu Sadhus and a driver were killed by an unruly mob.

Media reports said that both Arnab and wife were unhurt in the attack.

Social media is flooded with posts from supporters and ‘haters’ of Goswami. Prominent political leaders have also joined the social media debate.

“Democracy is all about Discussion, Debate, Discourse
and not of Suppression of expression by indulging in violence,” said Devendra Fadnavis, former Maharashtra chief minister.

“I strongly condemn the cowardly attack on senior editor Arnab Goswami. I request the state government to please ensure strict action and punishment to the guilty.”
