A 20-year-old Indian doctoral student was shot dead near the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus (UTSC), prompting a homicide investigation by the Toronto Police Service. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and drawn a strong response from the Consulate General of India in Toronto.
Police said the shooting occurred on Tuesday (23), in the area of Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road, close to the university campus. Officers were dispatched at around 3:34 pm after receiving a call reporting 'unknown trouble' in the area.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a young man suffering from severe injuries. Authorities later confirmed that the victim had sustained a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim was identified as Shivank Avasthi, a 20-year-old Indian national pursuing doctoral studies in Toronto.
According to police, the suspect or suspects involved in the shooting fled the area before officers could arrive. No arrests have been made so far, and investigators have not released details about a possible motive. The Toronto Police Service confirmed that this killing is the city’s 41st homicide of 2025.
Following the shooting, parts of the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus were temporarily locked down as a precaution while police conducted their initial investigation. Authorities have since appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information to contact police or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
The Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed deep sorrow over the student’s death. In a statement posted on X, the consulate said it was “deeply anguished” by the tragic loss and confirmed that it is in close contact with the bereaved family. The consulate added that it is extending all necessary assistance and remains engaged with local authorities as the investigation continues.
The incident comes amid heightened concern within the Indian community in Toronto, especially after another recent homicide involving an Indian national in the city. Toronto Police have emphasized that investigations are ongoing and have reiterated their request for public cooperation to help identify those responsible.
As authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the killing, community members and students have expressed grief and concern over safety near campus areas.
