India’s new parliament is likely to be inaugurated later in May by prime minister Narendra Modi to mark his government’s nine years.

NDTV cited sources to say that Modi will inaugurate the new building, which is in its final stages, on May 28.

Modi first took oath as the prime minister on May 26, 2014. He won his second consecutive term in 2019 and is eyeing the third next year.

The new parliament building can house as many as 1,124 parliamentarians. It also features a grand Constitution Hall to showcase the country’s democratic heritage and other areas such as for dining and parking.

The new structure has three dwars (entry points) — Gyan Dwar, Shakti Dwar and Karma Dwar besides separate entries for the parliamentarians, VIPs and visitors.

The report cited the sources as saying that the upcoming monsoon session of the parliament will be held in the new building under a revised set of rules.

The foundation stone of the new parliament building was laid by the prime minister in December 2020.

The new structure is located close to the current building which is functional since 1927 when the British ruled India. It was designed by architects Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker and it was constructed over a period of six years.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, which suffered a humiliating loss in the southern state of Karnataka last week and now has no state under its control in southern India, has planned a huge month-long “special contact campaign” across the country to mark nine years of the Modi government.

It will kick off on May 30 and continue till June 30.

Modi will launch the campaign, according to the sources that said a second rally of the prime minister will be held on May 31. Several rallies will be held across the country and leaders from the states will also be invited to the rallies.
