WITH the Indian Premier League set to resume on May 17, the BCCI and IPL franchises are exerting pressure on foreign boards to ensure that their players return, despite some lingering safety concerns.
IPL COO Hemang Amin has been authorized by the BCCI to speak to Cricket Australia (CA) and England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and allay their safety concerns.
CA is working with the government and the Indian board on security arrangements with several players set to make a decision on whether to return to the Indian Premier League when it resumes this week, the governing body said on Tuesday.
As per the revised schedule remaining 17 games would resume on May 17 with the final rescheduled for June 3 from May 25.
This would leave some Australian players, such as Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Inglis, little time to get ready for their World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa at Lord’s, which begins on June 11.
“Following the announcement that the Indian Premier League will resume on Saturday, Cricket Australia will support players in their individual decisions whether to return to India or not,” Cricket Australia said in a statement.
All 10 teams are in touch with their overseas players and trying to work out their return to India.
Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan claimed their next game is on May 20 and they are contacting the foreign players in their team.
They include Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, Sam Curran, Jamie Overton, Noor Ahmad and Matheesha Pathirana.
Afghanistan’s Ahmad and Sri Lanka’s Pathirana are set to join the team while there are doubts over the availability of their New Zealand players.
At Punjab Kings, Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis and compatriot Josh Inglis may not return to India, though head coach Ricky Ponting is trying his best to convince them.
Fellow Aussies Xavier Bartlett and Aaron Hardie, along with Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Omarzai and South African Marco Jansen are expected to return.
Delhi Capitals contacted their overseas players on Tuesday and are waiting to hear back from them. Australian pacer Mitchell Starc is among their key players.
SunRisers Hyderabad wants its captain Pat Cummins and marauding batter Travis Head to return for the remaining three league games.
In this IPL season, Gujarat Titans is currently on top of the table with 16 points and superior NRR of 0.793, followed by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (16 points, 0.482), Punjab Kings (15), Mumbai Indians (14), Delhi Capitals (13), Kolkata Knight Riders (11) and Lucknow Super Giants (10).
The T20 league was suspended on May 9 due to an India-Pakistan military showdown, triggered by the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir.
A day after its suspension, a ceasefire between the two countries was announced, paving the way for IPL’s resumption. (Agencies)
