9 Dead in Jammu & Kashmir Police Station 'Accidental Blast'

A total of nine people were killed and 32 injured in the police station blast in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir.

After the Delhi blast, which took place on Monday (10), one more blast in India's Jammu & Kashmir has made headlines. The 'accidental blast' in the police station of Srinagar on late Friday (14) killed nine people, and injured around 32, has been taken under investigation. Jammu & Kashmir's Lieutenant General Manoj Sinha has ordered a probe, which is now called 'accidental blast.'

According to the information received, the blast occurred when the police were extracting samples from a large cache of explosives confiscated from Haryana’s Faridabad in connection with an inter-state terror module case. The J&K police have dismissed claims of any Pakistan-based terror group being responsible for the blast.

“Due to the sensitive and unstable nature of the recovered material, the sampling and examination were being carried out with extreme caution. Despite all precautions, an accidental blast occurred last night,” J&K Director General of Police, Nalin Prabhat, said.

In a statement on the incident, Union Home Ministry joint secretary Prashant Lokhande said the cause of the explosion is yet to be ascertained, even though the recovered explosives were being forwarded for forensic examination per standard operating procedure. The transportation of explosives was being done in the past two days, he added.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) unit in Bhaderwah cancelled the victory celebration of Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi, the winning candidate from Budgam, following the tragic accidental blast at Nowgam Police Station in Srinagar that claimed multiple lives.

As a mark of respect, PDP Bhaderwah observed a two-minute silence, offering prayers for the souls lost not only in the Nowgam tragedy but also in the recent Delhi blast. Party members prayed for strength for the bereaved families and for the swift recovery of all those injured.

Leaders of the party said that celebrations were inappropriate at a time when families are mourning, and the entire UT remains in pain. They dedicated their prayers to the fallen heroes, whose service and sacrifice, they said, would always be remembered.
The PDP clinched victory in the Budgam Assembly by-election on Friday (14), with party candidate Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi winning by a margin of 4,478 votes after all 17 rounds of counting.
