Manmohan Singh, former PM & architect of India’s liberalisation, turns 90; Modi, Rahul greet

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi greeted his predecessor Manmohan Singh on Monday (26) when he turned 90.

Singh, a renowned economist, was India’s prime minister between 2004-14 during the rule of the United Progressive Alliance led by the Indian National Congress.

He was also India’s finance minister in the P V Narasimha Rao-led government during 1991-96, an epochal era for the country’s economy marked by wide-ranging reforms.

Modi tweeted, “Birthday greetings to former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Praying for his long and healthy life.”

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi wished Singh and called him India’s “India’s finest statesmen”.

“Wishing one of India’s finest statesmen, Dr Manmohan Singh ji a very happy birthday. His humility, dedication and contribution to India’s development, have few parallels. He is an inspiration to me, and to crores of other Indians. I pray for his good health and happiness,” Gandhi tweeted.
