Many feared dead as bus rams into truck on India highway

SEVERAL people were believed to have been killed while many were injured in a road accident on the Delhi-Lucknow highway near Moradabad in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh early on Monday (28).

Initial reports said a private bus going from Punjab to Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh rammed into a truck from behind, leaving many of its passengers dead on the spot. The exact number of casualties was not known till the latest reports came out.

The injured people were admitted to Moradabad District Hospital. Some of them were in critical conditions. Eyewitnesses said there were about 50-60 passengers in the bus. The truck was also carrying around 20-25 people. Police officers from Pakbara Police Station of Moradabad were on the spot to probe the matter.

“Our driver was stopped by the police. We were in the DCM pick-up. A bus was coming from behind. Three of our men have died – Ashish, Suresh and Nanhe. The other 20 are injured,” Balram, who was travelling in the truck, said.

The local police said five people died in the accident and the injured were taken to the hospital.

Visuals from the spot showed a toppled bus on the road. The district administration was yet to release the official death toll.
