New Mega Evolutions confirmed for Pokémon Legends: Z-A
The Pokémon Company has confirmed that Pokémon Legends: Z-A will feature new Mega Pokémon, including the debut of Mega Dragonite. The announcement was made during the latest Pokémon Presents broadcast, alongside new gameplay details and a release date.
Set in the modern-day Kalos region, Pokémon Legends: Z-A revives the Mega Evolution mechanic first introduced in Pokémon X and Y. These powerful alternate forms have taken a backseat in recent years but are now returning with both familiar and brand-new species.

New and returning Mega Pokémon
Alongside the reveal of Mega Dragonite, the presentation confirmed the return of several established Mega Evolutions. These include:
- Mega Kangaskhan
- Mega Absol
- Mega Charizard X
While Pokémon Legends: Arceus introduced region-specific species tied to a historical setting, Z-A is set in the present day. This modern setting makes it less likely for entirely new species to be introduced to the Kalos Pokédex — but Mega Evolutions, as enhanced forms of existing Pokémon, offer a way to expand the roster without altering the core Pokédex numbering.
Setting, story, and gameplay
Players will be recruited into Team MZ, a group committed to protecting Lumiose City. Teammates include:
- Naveen, a fashion designer
- Lida, a professional dancer
- Urbain or Taunie, depending on the player character’s chosen appearance
The game features dynamic day-and-night gameplay. During the day, players can explore, catch Pokémon, and complete quests. At night, they compete in the Z-A Royale, a competitive battle mode using the Pokémon caught throughout the day.
One of the key antagonists is Corbeau, the leader of the Rust Syndicate, a villainous organisation operating in Lumiose City.
Character customisation and returning allies
Pokémon Legends: Z-A includes expanded character customisation options. Players can alter hairstyles, eye colour, and outfits, which also tie into the in-game Photo Mode for capturing stylised images of their trainer.
Another key character is Emma, a detective in Lumiose City. Familiar to longtime fans of the series, Emma will assist the player during the course of the game’s storyline.
