India's opposition party leader Rahul Gandhi, has begun a significant visit to four South American countries aimed at strengthening India’s diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties with the region. The Congress party announced that Gandhi will engage with political leaders, university students, and business communities during the trip.
Pawan Khera, head of the Congress media and publicity department, confirmed the visit in a post on X but did not disclose the exact duration of Gandhi’s foreign tour.
According to the Congress, Gandhi will visit Brazil and Colombia, where he will interact with university students, encouraging dialogue with young minds and fostering collaboration with the next generation of global leaders. He is also scheduled to hold meetings with presidents and senior political leaders across multiple countries to reinforce democratic and strategic relationships.
The party stated that Gandhi will engage with business leaders to explore opportunities for diversifying trade and partnerships, particularly in light of global economic changes and recent US tariffs impacting India.
Highlighting the significance of the visit, Congress said it carries historical resonance as India and South American nations have shared longstanding ties through the Non-Aligned Movement, solidarity within the Global South, and a commitment to a multipolar world order. Rahul Gandhi’s outreach, the party added, continues this tradition while opening new avenues of cooperation in trade, technology, sustainability, and cultural exchange.
Congress emphasized that such international engagements by India’s democratic opposition play an essential role in shaping partnerships and enhancing the country’s presence on the global stage.
