Texas Republican leader Alexander Duncan has sparked controversy by opposing the construction of a 90-foot statue of Lord Hanuman in Sugar Land, Texas. Known as the Statue of Union, it is located at the Shri Ashtalakshmi Temple and is considered North America’s tallest Hanuman statue. Duncan argued that the statue should not be allowed because, in his view, the United States is a Christian nation.

In a post on X, Duncan wrote, “Why are we allowing a false statue of a false Hindu God to be here in Texas? We are a CHRISTIAN nation.” He also cited passages from the Bible, including Exodus 20:3-4 and Romans 1:25, to support his position against what he described as idol worship.

Duncan’s remarks quickly drew sharp criticism online. The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) condemned his comments as “anti-Hindu and inflammatory” and filed a formal complaint with the Texas Republican Party, urging the party to take action against him. The organization emphasized that such statements show disrespect for the First Amendment, which guarantees freedom of religion.

Many netizens also responded, reminding Duncan that the US Constitution protects all religious practices. One user highlighted that the Vedas, foundational Hindu texts, predate Christianity and have influenced it, suggesting that respect for other religions is important. Another wrote, “We are a nation full of people with different religious beliefs. If followers of a religion are not harming others, their faith is protected under the US Constitution.”

The Statue of Union, unveiled on August 18, 2024, was inspired by Sri Chinnajeeyar Swamiji. Standing 90 feet tall, it symbolizes strength, devotion, and service, and was named after Hanuman’s role in uniting Lord Ram with Sita. The statue is intended to be a spiritual hub, promoting hope, peace, and devotion for generations of devotees.
