The Sivagiri Foundation of Washington, D.C. (SFWDC), a community organization dedicated to the teachings of Sree Narayana Guru, recently hosted its annual Onam and Chathayam celebrations at the Potomac Community Center in Maryland. The September 6 event brought together devotees and families from across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, highlighting both Kerala’s cultural traditions and the Guru’s enduring vision of unity and service.
Ceremonial beginning and feast
The program began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp, followed by the recitation of Daivadasakam, a devotional hymn central to Guru’s philosophy. Attendees then partook in a grand traditional Onam Sadhya, the multi-course vegetarian feast that symbolizes the cultural richness of Kerala and the spirit of Onam. The event offered younger generations a chance to experience customs and rituals that connect them to their heritage.
Community leaders and guests
SFWDC president Ajayakumar Kesavan welcomed guests and set the tone for the evening, emphasizing the foundation’s mission to preserve Narayana Guru’s message of social equality and harmony. The gathering was further marked by greetings from Sunil Kumar Krishnan, representing the Sree Narayana Association of New York, and Mohankumar Arumugham, chairman of the World Malayalee Council—Washington D.C. Province.
Launch of FSNONA Florida convention 2025
One of the highlights of the program was the ceremonial launch of the 2025 Florida Convention organized under the Federation of Sree Narayana Associations of North America (FSNONA). Binoob Sreedharan, president of FSNONA, addressed the gathering about the importance of the upcoming convention. He accepted the first registration from Peethambaran Thaivalappil, a longtime SFWDC member, symbolizing the active participation of the Washington-area community in shaping national events.
Cultural programs and conclusion
The evening also featured cultural performances that celebrated Kerala’s diverse traditions through music, dance, and recitations, reflecting both the festive spirit of Onam and the reverence of Chathayam, the birth anniversary of Sree Narayana Guru. These programs not only entertained but also educated younger participants about cultural roots and values.
The celebrations concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by SFWDC secretary Ambika Kumar, who acknowledged the volunteers, performers, and community members who made the event a success. Organizers emphasized that such gatherings are vital for strengthening cultural bonds, passing traditions to future generations, and fostering unity among the diaspora.
