GERMAN chancellor Olaf Scholz on Saturday (9) turned heads among the world leaders who attended the G20 summit in New Delhi by sporting a black eye patch. While questions were doing rounds as to why the 65-year-old politician wore the eyewear, it was revealed that he did it after injuring his face while jogging last week.

Scholz’s spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit said the German chancellor suffered minor injuries and will have to wear the patch over the right eye for the next few days.

The chancellor, however, did not have any problem during the summit, his spokesperson added while speaking to the media. Scholz has been a regular runner for many years.

Last week, the chancellor posted a picture on X, formerly Twitter, showing himself wearing the patch over his right eye, with red scrape marks visible around the edge.

“Thanks for the well wishes. It looks worse than it is!” he wrote under the picture on his official account in German.

“Excited to see the memes,” the witty leader said.

Modi-Scholz bilateral meeting

Modi met Scholz over a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the summit on Sunday (10), the concluding day of the summit, where both leaders congratulated each other over their respective country’s contribution to make the G20 summit successful.

It was Scholz’s second visit to the south Asian nation, following his state visit in February. Germany has ensured high-level participation at various G20 meetings and events in India under its presidency.

Modi and Scholz reviewed the progress in their bilateral strategic partnership and discussed ways to deepen cooperation in areas such as defence, green and sustainable development, critical minerals, education and mobility of skilled personnel.

They also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.

Modi also invited Scholz to India to take part in the next round of the Intergovernmental Commission.
