Three Indian students were among 40 people injured in a terrorist attack at Sydney's Bondi beach in Australia, according to a media report published on Tuesday (16). The attack took place on Sunday (14) during a public gathering held for the Jewish festival known as 'Hanukkah by the Sea.'
The Australia Today news portal reported that two of the three Indian students are currently receiving treatment in a hospital. The identity of the injured students has not been released by authorities.
Officials have also not confirmed the exact nature or seriousness of their injuries, though they were hurt during the shooting.
The attack occurred when two men opened fire on the crowd attending the event. The suspects were identified as 24-year-old Naveed Akram and his 50-year-old father. At least 15 people were killed in the shooting, including a 10-year-old child. The incident has shocked Australia and drawn international attention.
Authorities said that five of the injured victims are in critical condition. In addition, two police officers who were hurt while responding to the attack are in serious but stable condition. Emergency services and medical teams were deployed quickly, and the area was secured soon after the shooting.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said the investigation is ongoing and continues to widen as new information becomes available. He said police are examining the alleged attackers’ international travel history and the discovery of extremist material linked to the case. Investigators are also working with national and international agencies as part of the probe.
Meanwhile, Indian police provided additional information about one of the gunmen. According to a Reuters report dated December 16, Indian authorities said one attacker, identified as Sajid Akram, was originally from Hyderabad, a city in the southern Indian state of Telangana. Police said he had limited contact with his family in India.
In a statement, Telangana state police said family members did not know any radical beliefs or activities linked to him. They also said the family was unaware of the circumstances that may have led to his radicalization.
Indian authorities said they are in touch with Australian officials and are monitoring the situation closely, especially in relation to the injured Indian students.
