Ranbir Kapoor once made a hilarious and unexpected remark during a promotional event for Imtiaz Ali’s film Tamasha, when Deepika Padukone was asked to choose between him and Ranveer Singh as the better actor. Deepika, clearly amused and slightly cornered by the tricky question, responded with a diplomatic answer, saying, “It’s like saying, do you prefer your mother or your father?”
The moment took a comical turn when someone from the audience asked who the “mother” would be in this metaphor. Without missing a beat, Ranbir Kapoor quipped, “I want to be the father,” sending the audience into fits of laughter.
The amusing exchange brought out the easy camaraderie that still exists between Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone despite their much-publicized breakup years ago. The former couple, who were once one of Bollywood’s most loved pairs both on and off-screen, continue to show mutual respect and light-heartedness in public appearances.
During the same conversation, Deepika elaborated on how unnecessary and reductive comparisons in the film industry can be. She said, “I just feel like we are constantly comparing all the time—whether it’s films, actors, this co-star or that. We don’t have to keep comparing all the time. His personality and Ranveer’s personality and the different kind of work they do—we have to appreciate and accept them for the way they are.” Her mature and thoughtful response won hearts, reflecting the poise she brings to such delicate questions.

Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor had a romantic history that ended in a very public breakup. Despite the emotional fallout, the duo managed to maintain a professional relationship and even starred in major hits together post-breakup, such as Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Tamasha. Their undeniable on-screen chemistry continued to captivate audiences.
Following her split with Ranbir, Deepika found love with her Bajirao Mastani co-star Ranveer Singh. The couple dated for several years before tying the knot in a grand wedding in 2018. Ranbir Kapoor, on the other hand, eventually settled down with actress Alia Bhatt, and the couple got married in 2022. They now have a daughter together.
Interestingly, despite their past, Deepika, Ranbir, Ranveer, and Alia continue to maintain cordial relations. There is no reported animosity between them, and they are often seen speaking positively about one another. In fact, all four are rumored to come together on screen in Brahmastra 2, the sequel to Ayan Mukerji’s fantasy-action saga. While no official announcement has been made, the buzz around this casting has generated significant excitement among fans.
This moment from the Tamasha promotions remains one of the most memorable and light-hearted glimpses into the real-life dynamics of some of Bollywood’s biggest stars, proving that good humor and mutual respect can exist even after relationships evolve.
