INDIAN home minister Amit Shah on Monday (13) arrived in Ahmedabad in the western Indian state of Gujarat ahead of the oath-taking of Bhupendra Patel as the new chief minister of Gujarat.
Shah, a former home minister of Gujarat, on Sunday (12) congratulated Patel, a first-time member of the state’s legislative assembly, on being picked as the new chief minister. Patel will succeed Vijay Rupani, who quit on Saturday (11) after serving since August 2016.

Patel, a member of Gujarat’s influential Patidar community, earlier met Rupani at the chief minister’s residence in Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat. He also offered ‘gau puja’ at Ahmedabad’s Swaminarayan Temple.

The announcement of the name of Patel, 59, as the chief minister-designate came at a legislative party meeting of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and it was a surprise move for many since the low-profile leader was not seen to be among the top contenders for the post. He represents Ghatlodia constituency under the Ahmedabad constituency, which was earlier held by Anandiben Patel, another former Gujarat chief minister who is currently serving as the governor of the northern state of Uttar Pradesh with an additional charge of the central state of Madhya Pradesh.
