Indian cricketer Bhuvaneshwar Kumar reach a major milestone in the Indian Premier League 2026 by becoming the first fast bowler to take 200 wickets. He achieved the feat after dismissing a Chennai Super Kings batter in Bengaluru, joining an elite group led by Yuvendra Chahal, who remains the only other bowler to cross the 200-wicket mark in the tournament.
Over a career spanning 16 IPL seasons, Bhuvneshwar has built a reputation for control and efficiency. His overall economy rate of 7.69 stands out, especially given his role as a pace bowler in a format often dominated by high scoring. He is also among a select group of bowlers with multiple five-wicket hauls and has delivered one of the highest numbers of maiden overs in the league.
Bhuvneshwar’s effectiveness is evident across all phases of an innings. In the powerplay, he has taken 81 wickets—the most by any bowler, while maintaining a tight economy rate of 6.53. He has also been particularly successful in the opening over, claiming 27 wickets, second only to Trent Boult.
At the death, where bowlers often face the most pressure, Bhuvneshwar has remained reliable. He has picked up 93 wickets in overs 17 to 20, placing him just behind Dwayne Bravo. His economy rate of 9.52 in this phase ranks among the best for bowlers with significant experience.
While he began his IPL journey with Pune Warriors India, it was his long stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad that defined his legacy. Between 2014 and 2024, he played 145 matches for the franchise and took 157 wickets, making him both their most-capped player and leading wicket-taker. No other player has reached 100 matches or 100 wickets for the team. His dominance at home is also notable, with 48 wickets in Hyderabad—the most by any bowler at a single IPL venue.
Bhuvneshwar’s peak years came between 2014 and 2017, when he took 87 wickets in just 59 matches. He won the Purple Cap in consecutive seasons, claiming 23 wickets in 2016 and 26 in 2017, becoming the only player to lead the wicket charts in back-to-back IPL seasons.
He has also enjoyed success against several top batters. Ajinkya Rahane has been dismissed by him seven times, more than any other batter. He has also repeatedly troubled players like Virat Kohli, Shane Watson, Sanju Samson, and Shubman Gill.
