Led by MS Dhoni all this while, IPL 2026, Chennai Super Kings finds itself making wrong headlines. Till now, the team has lost both its opening matches. One played against Rajastjan Royals in Guwahati, Assam, and another loss was with five wickets at Chennai to the Punjab Kings on Friday (3).
In the second match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, CSK posted a strong total of 209 after being asked to bat first. Ayush Mhatre scored 73, while Shivam Dube added 45. However, Punjab chased the target comfortably in 18.4 overs, with contributions from Priyansh Arya, Shreyas Iyer, and Marcus Stoinis.
CSK currently sit at the bottom of the table with a net run rate of -2.562. Despite this, their playoff chances remain intact. With 12 matches still to play in a 14-game league format, there is significant time for recovery. Historically, teams have bounced back from poor starts, including CSK themselves in 2024 when they reached the final after early struggles.
The team still has a strong core. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad continues to lead from the front, alongside the new addition Sanju Samson. The middle order remains solid, and the bowling attack offers variety despite recent setbacks.
The absence of MS Dhoni due to a calf strain has been significant, and his return is expected to boost team morale. Similarly, Dewald Brevis is also sidelined with an injury.
Upcoming fixtures against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Delhi Capitals, and Kolkata Knight Riders provide an opportunity to regain momentum.
With experience, depth, and home advantage, CSK remain well-positioned to mount a comeback and stay in contention for the playoffs.
