Actor Gina Carano has reached a settlement with Lucasfilm and its parent company, the Walt Disney Company, concluding her lawsuit which alleged she was wrongfully dismissed from The Mandalorian for her social media posts expressing right-wing views.

Filed in federal court in California in 2023, the lawsuit claimed Carano had been unfairly fired after she posted content comparing the treatment of American conservatives to that of Jews in Nazi Germany. The post led to widespread online backlash, with the hashtag #FireGinaCarano trending across social media platforms.

Terms undisclosed, but future collaboration hinted

The terms of the settlement have not been made public. However, both parties agreed in a federal court filing on 8 August that the case should be dismissed with prejudice, meaning it cannot be brought back to court. The dismissal still requires formal approval from a judge.

In a statement, Lucasfilm said:

“Ms Carano was always well respected by her directors, co-stars and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect. With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms Carano in the near future.”

Carano responds and thanks supporters

Carano, a former mixed martial artist turned actor, portrayed Cara Dune in the Star Wars spin-off series for two seasons before her departure in 2021. The show, which stars Pedro Pascal, premiered in 2019 and has run for three seasons. A film, The Mandalorian and Grogu, is set for release in summer 2026.

In a statement, Carano said:

“I’d like to thank you all for your unrelenting support throughout my life and career. You’ve been the heartbeat that has kept my story alive. I hope to make you proud. I am excited to flip the page and move onto the next chapter. My desires remain in the arts, which is where I hope you will join me.”

She also credited Elon Musk for financially supporting her lawsuit, saying he had helped “without asking for anything in return”.

Background on the controversy

Carano’s departure followed criticism of several of her past social media posts. She had previously mocked mask-wearing during the pandemic and shared false claims of voter fraud related to the 2020 US presidential election.

Her lawsuit claimed she had been punished for expressing personal political beliefs and accused Disney of caving to an “online bully mob”.
