In a major shift, more than 35 per cent of Indian students pursuing higher education abroad are now opting for the UK, Germany, and Ireland instead of the US. Once the top destination for Indian aspirants, the US is witnessing a steady decline in student enrollments due to rising visa restrictions, unpredictable work permits, and soaring tuition costs.
In contrast, Europe’s affordable universities, flexible immigration policies, and better post-study work opportunities are drawing the new generation of globally minded Indian youth.
STEM courses: Germany and Ireland gain popularity
Germany and Ireland have emerged as preferred destinations for Indian students pursuing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) degrees. Germany’s public universities offer high-quality engineering and tech programs at minimal tuition costs, while Ireland’s booming technology and medtech sectors create a robust ecosystem for IT and health-related fields. Their straightforward post-study visa processes and industry partnerships make them appealing alternatives to the US’s complex immigration system.
Business and finance students head to the UK and Ireland
Indian students interested in business, finance, and management are now favoring the UK and Ireland, which together saw a 40% increase in Indian enrollments in 2024. Prestigious institutions like the London Business School and Trinity College Dublin provide globally recognized degrees and internship pathways. Ireland’s reputation as a European headquarters for major global corporations like Google, Meta, and Apple offers graduates a competitive edge in the global job market.
Tech and IT graduates seek visa-friendly nations
With the US tightening visa norms and hiking application fees, Indian students are now choosing the UK and Ireland for computer science and IT programs. Both countries allow up to two years of post-study work, enabling students to gain valuable international experience.
Ireland, in particular, has seen a 25 per cent year-on-year rise in Indian enrollments in technology-related fields, supported by its vibrant startup ecosystem and growing job market.
Why the US is Losing Ground
The combination of high tuition fees, visa uncertainties, and limited post-study work opportunities is making the US a less attractive option. Germany, Ireland, and the UK offer a better return on investment (ROI) through affordable education and clear career progression paths.
These countries’ education models, which closely integrate classroom learning with real-world work experience, allow Indian students to transform their academic pursuits into tangible career opportunities, a key factor behind this migration trend.
