Sweeney breaks her silence on Bond rumors
Sydney Sweeney has finally addressed the swirling rumors that she may be joining the next James Bond film but she’s not confirming anything just yet.
In an interview with Variety, the Euphoria and Christy actress gave a cautious answer when asked about the speculation.
“I can’t. I don’t know. To be honest, I don’t know all the Bond rumors, but I’ve always been a huge fan of the franchise, and I’m excited and curious to see what they do with it,” she said.
Reports from Variety suggest that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has expressed interest in Sweeney playing a Bond girl in the 2028 installment, though the actress says her decision would depend on the story itself.
“Depends on the script,” Sweeney said. “I think I’d have more fun as James Bond.”
Amazon’s new era for 007
Plans for the 26th James Bond film have been in development since Amazon and MGM Studios gained full creative control of the franchise earlier this year. The studio, which bought the rights in 2022, reportedly paid Eon Productions, owned by longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson $20 million for creative oversight.
The upcoming film will mark the beginning of a new chapter for 007, with Dune director Denis Villeneuve taking the helm and Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight writing the screenplay.
Villeneuve is expected to begin casting for the next Bond in 2026 after completing Dune: Part Three. According to Deadline, the director is looking for a “fresh face” from the British Isles, which aligns with ongoing rumors that Bullet Train star Aaron Taylor-Johnson is among the contenders.
Why Sweeney remains in the mix
Though the role of Bond traditionally goes to a British actor, there are no reported restrictions on where the Bond girl can come from meaning Sweeney, a Spokane, Washington native, remains a possibility.
Her connection to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has also fueled speculation. In June, she was spotted at Bezos and Lauren Sánchez’s high-profile wedding in Venice, a detail that intensified online discussion.
A U.S. Sun report later claimed that Sweeney was “the top name on the casting sheet” and that Villeneuve was eager to have her join the project. “Denis believes she is hugely talented, as well as having an alluring appeal to younger generations, vital in modernising the franchise,” the source said.
A busy year ahead
Sweeney shows no sign of slowing down. She stars in Christy, a sports biopic set for release in November, and will appear in Paul Feig’s The Housemaid this winter. She’s also set to return as Cassie Howard in the third and final season of Euphoria, premiering in spring 2026.
Beyond that, the actress will appear in I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl and the untitled Gundam film, keeping her schedule packed, whether or not she ends up trading in her scripts for a spy gadget.
