AN AMERICAN national who visited India for tourism purpose was allegedly molested by her tourist guide during a photography session at the Taj Mahal in Agra in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

The police confirmed the news and said the accused was identified as Manmohan Arya, 54, and arrested.

The victim reached Agra with her husband to view the iconic 17th century marvel on Saturday (6) when the accused approached them to offer services.

It was reported that Arya started clicking pictures of the woman, in her 50s, near the central tank area and allegedly tried to kiss her when her husband moved ahead.

The distraught tourist and her husband immediately raised an alarm and reported the incident to the security personnel at the site. The guide was soon apprehended and handed over to the police.

A case of molestation was registered against the guide and he was remanded to judicial custody, the assistant commissioner of police in charge of Taj Mahal’s security told India Today.

The mausoleum made of white marvel is a UNESCO heritage site and a symbol of eternal love, constructed by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan following the death of his favourite wife Mumtaz Mahal.

World leaders have visited the Taj Mahal over the years and they have included among others, members of the British royal family and American presidents.
