SINGER Usha Uthup emphasised the importance of books in shaping young minds while inaugurating the 16th edition of the Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival (AKLF) on Friday.
Addressing the audience, she said, "Reading books… feeling books … it is an experience which is totally different, which will never age. Printed words create a lasting impact on young minds. WhatsApp and Instagram are fine, but we need to get back to books to trace our roots.”
The festival, featuring over 120 prominent figures from literature and other fields, also included discussions on fitness and health.
Milind Soman, co-author of the book ‘Keep Moving’, highlighted the importance of staying physically and mentally prepared for life’s challenges.
He remarked, “Fitness is the ability to enjoy life. It’s not about competition but about being physically and mentally ready to embrace every moment.”
Uthup entertained the audience with performances of "Ganesha Vandana" and Adele’s “Skyfall,” blending tradition with modernity.
Reflecting on her career, she attributed her success to her team and audience, stating, “We can't do anything without our audiences.”
Festival Director Anjum Katyal described the event as a platform for celebrating literature in all its forms, promising something for everyone.
