INDIA'S women football players did their country proud on Sunday (10) when they hammered Bahrain 5-0 in a match at the Hamad Town Stadium in Hamad Town, Bahrain. It was a strong comeback for the Indian side after their shocking 0-1 loss to Tunisia in the previous friendly game in the United Arab Emirates.
The Indian team is playing a series of friendly matches as part of its preparation for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, which the country will host in January and February.
Swedish coach Thomas Dennerby’s girls raised their games by quite a few notches in the game on Sunday. Sangita Basfore put India ahead in the 13th minute before Pyari Xaxa (19th minute, 68th minute), Indumathi Kathiresan (34th minute) and Manisha Kalyan (69th minute) added to the team’s tally.
The final scoreline could have seen more goals in India’s favour had the visitors not missed a few more chances earlier in the game. But they never let the momentum go away and were leading 3-0 at the break. Bahrain also got a number of advantages during the game but could not convert any of them.
India are ranked 57th in Fifa’s list while Bahrain are at 85.
India will play Chinese Taipei, ranked 40, in their next friendly on Wednesday (13).
