Football pundit and coach Gary Neville is of the opinion that Manchester United could end up in the worse half of the ongoing Premier League if they allow Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo to exit.

Speculation is rife over Ronaldo throughout the summer after the five-time Ballon d’Or winner having told the club about his exit plans. The 37-year-old is aiming to leave partly because of his ambition to continue participating in Champions League football.

However, United, who are currently placed at the bottom of the points table with two losses in as many games, remain adamant over Ronaldo saying he is not for sale and want to see him out the final contract year. So far, the star player has looked a frustrated figure as the Reds saw their worst possible kick-off to the campaign, losing to Brighton 1-2 and to Brentford 0-4.

While only the club and the player know what’s in store, Neville told Sky Sports that things could get even worse for Manchester United should Ronaldo exit.

“As I sit here today, I think there’s a massive decision they have to make on Cristiano Ronaldo and they’re damned if they do, damned if they don’t,” he told the channel.

“A few weeks ago before the season started, the best thing to do was facilitate a move out of the club for Cristiano because he’s obviously not happy and the club aren’t happy with him. The problem they have now is if they lose him, there’s nothing left in terms of the goalscoring part of the pitch.

Manchester United have won the league the most number of times — 13 but their last crown came a decade ago in 2012-13.
