VETERAN screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar emphasized Amitabh Bachchan's professionalism and remarkable film output during an event in Mumbai.
Speaking at the third edition of the Indian Express' Expresso series, Akhtar reflected on Bachchan's work ethic and his rise in the film industry, particularly through the 1973 action crime film "Zanjeer," which marked the beginning of the 'Angry Young Man' era.
Akhtar, along with writing partner Salim Khan, was instrumental in Bachchan's early career. He has done around 14 films with Bachchan including "Sholay", "Don", "Deewar", and "Amar Akbar Anthony", and praised the superstar for his work ethic.
"He had tremendous discipline and focus. Seven o' clock shift would mean, he would be there quarter to seven in spite of being a star," Akhtar said.
He noted that Bachchan’s ability to deliver hit films was unmatched, even surpassing screen legend Dilip Kumar. "His turnover was much more than him (Kumar). Dilip saab used to do one film in two years, he (Bachchan) gave seven superhits in a year alone," Akhtar added.
Akhtar also discussed the influence of the iconic dialogue "Mere paas maa hai" from the film "Deewar," commenting on how society's reverence for mothers often comes at the expense of other women. He remarked, "In any society where there is a lot of premium on mothers, it means women are in a bad shape. They are in trouble."
Zoya Akhtar, who accompanied her father at the event, was asked about her involvement in the docuseries "Angry Young Men," which explores the legacy of Salim-Javed.
When questioned why the docuseries did not show the two writing partners sitting together, she stated, "It was a directorial choice," adding that the series' director, Namrata Rao, would be better suited to answer the question.
