Krishan Guru-Murthy became the seventh celebrity to be eliminated from the popular celebrity dance reality show Strictly Come Dancing 2023.
The Channel 4 broadcaster lost out to Angela Rippon. After finishing at the foot of the leaderboard on Saturday evening with a score of 25 out of a possible 40 for Samba to Bamboléo by Gipsy Kings, the result of the public vote landed Guru-Murthy in the dance-off alongside the 79-year-old Rippon.
Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, and Anton Du Beke decided to save Rippon and her pro partner Kai Widdrington who had performed a Paso doble to Madonna’s “Hung Up” at the expense of Guru-Murthy and his professional dance partner Lauren Oakley – although head judge Shirley Ballas admitted she would’ve saved him.
The broadcaster revealed that he was “heartbroken” after his elimination from the show, sharing a lengthy post to social media site X.
He wrote, “That’s all folks. Heartbroken. Thanks for the love and support – I’m so delighted that so many people enjoyed watching us. @bbcstrictly brought me more happiness than I ever imagined. It has been life-changing and life-affirming.”
He went on: “There is something about taking big risks, performing, giving it everything, making yourself totally vulnerable and shedding the armour you normally use to survive that is exhilarating, liberating and inspiring…”
He went on to praise his dance partner, Lauren, calling her “brilliant in every way, funny, clever, caring, gorgeous and wise” and also wrote that he knew his time on the show had to end because “the others were just too good”.
His elimination did not go down well with Strictly fans as they accused the show of protecting Angela, the show’s oldest ever contestant, to ensure she made it to Blackpool.
“I don’t like shouting fix but FIX for Angela and f**king Blackpool. On the one hand, fine, Krishnan was weak, but Angela R has been stale now for weeks,” one user wrote.
Another wrote, “Didn’t we all know the judges would save her to make sure the beeb are happy as they wanted her to reach Blackpool? What a farce.”
