PUSHKAR Singh Dhami, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member of the Uttarakhand legislative assembly, was on Saturday (3) picked as the next chief minister of the state. He was elected as the leader of the BJP legislature party, which paved the way for him to become the 10th chief minister of the state which was formed 21 years ago.

The 45-year-old Dhami, who is a two-time legislator from Khatima constituency of Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand, will succeed Tirath Singh Rawat and be the youngest chief minister the state has seen. Rawat’s four-month stay in the office came to an end on Friday (2) when he tendered his resignation saying the constitutional provision requiring him to get elected to the assembly within six months of taking office seemed unlikely.

Dhami, who is the sixth BJP chief minister overall in Uttarakhand and the third in four months, thanked his party leadership for reposing faith in him and said he will deal with the challenges that the state faces with everyone’s cooperation. Dhami’s election was announced by central observer Narendra Singh Tomar wo is considered to be close to the governor of Maharashtra and former chief minister of Uttarakhand Bhagat Singh Koshyari.

One of Dhami’s major challenges will be in 2022 when Uttarakhand will head to the assembly elections.
