Bollywood star Ranveer Singh has come under increased security after receiving a threatening voice message via WhatsApp from unidentified individuals, Mumbai Police confirmed Tuesday. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, with early suspicions pointing to a possible extortion attempt linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
According to police officials, Singh approached law enforcement after receiving the alarming message. Soon after, security arrangements were significantly tightened around his residence in Central Mumbai. Mumbai Police personnel have been stationed near his home, and additional private security guards have also been deployed within the housing complex.
Sources within the Crime Branch said investigators are examining whether the threat is connected to members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, a criminal network that has previously been linked to extortion and targeted threats against public figures. While officials have not confirmed the identities of those behind the message, they are treating the matter seriously and pursuing multiple leads.
The development comes just days after gunshots were fired outside the Juhu residence of filmmaker Rohit Shetty in a separate incident that also raised concerns about celebrity safety in Mumbai. In that case, an unidentified assailant allegedly fired five rounds outside Shetty’s home. Shubham Lonkar, an alleged member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang who is currently absconding, reportedly claimed responsibility for the shooting. Five individuals have since been arrested in connection with that case, and investigations are ongoing.
Meanwhile, the heightened security presence at Singh’s residential complex has sparked unease among some residents. On Tuesday, the managing committee of the housing society wrote to police authorities expressing concern over armed guards stationed in common areas. In their letter, committee members stated that the visible movement of personnel carrying weapons in shared spaces such as the lobby, gymnasium, and children’s play area has made residents uncomfortable.
Residents have questioned whether the security measures, though precautionary, may inadvertently create anxiety within the community. Police officials, however, maintain that the enhanced security is a necessary step while the investigation continues.
Authorities have assured that all angles, including a potential extortion motive, are being thoroughly examined.
