Highlights
In a landmark moment marking India’s 79th Independence Day, the Indian national flag was hoisted atop Seattle's iconic Space Needle for the very first time. Erected in 1962 for the World Fair, the Space Needle is a defining element of Seattle’s skyline and a symbol of the city’s innovation and tech-driven future in the US Pacific Northwest.
Dignitaries and community unite for historic event
This historic event was attended by the Consul General of India in Seattle, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, and key city leaders, all paying tribute to the growing influence and contributions of the Indian-American community in the region. The gathering underscored the vital role the Indian diaspora plays in shaping Seattle’s reputation as a major technology and innovation hub.
To further celebrate the occasion, a community reception was organized at Kerry Park, offering panoramic views of the cityscape—now dramatically accented by the tricolour flying high above the Space Needle. The event drew large numbers of Indian-American residents and well-wishers, who came together to witness and celebrate the momentous hoisting.
Local leaders honor India day and cultural ties
The reception at Kerry Park was graced by several distinguished US dignitaries, including Congressman Adam Smith (WA-9th district), Washington Supreme Court Chief Justice Debra L Stephens, Seattle Port Commissioner Sam Cho, and Seattle Parks and Recreation Director AP Diaz. Congressman Smith praised the event as a powerful symbol of Seattle’s diversity and the enduring ties between India and the Pacific Northwest.
The program also included cultural performances—national anthems, a dance segment showcasing India’s rich artistic heritage, and a poetic recital by renowned artist and actor Piyush Mishra.
In a special gesture, official proclamations declaring August 15 as “India Day” were issued by King County (encompassing 39 cities), as well as by the cities of Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma, and Bellevue, highlighting the strong and expanding bonds between India and Washington State.
Citywide commemoration
To amplify the celebration, several of Seattle’s most renowned landmarks—Lumen Stadium, T-Mobile Stadium, The Westin, Seattle Great Wheel, and the Space Needle itself—were lit in the Indian tricolour. The flag was also hoisted at major sites in Tacoma, such as the Dome, City Hall, and the headquarters of the police and fire departments.
The event came as India’s 6th Consulate in the US, inaugurated in Seattle in November 2023, continues to strengthen India’s diplomatic and cultural engagement with the Pacific Northwest.
