AT the press conference for the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards 2024, Shah Rukh Khan humorously remarked about his friend and filmmaker Karan Johar’s shift from directing films to hosting chat shows.

Shah Rukh, who will co-host the event with Johar, teased him for directing fewer films in recent years.

“He hosts chat shows, film shows. Picturein bhi toh bana mere bhai (When are you going to make films, my brother?)” Shah Rukh said, prompting laughter from Johar.

Johar acknowledged the jest, admitting, “This is sounding so wrong on so many levels for a filmmaker. That I should be making movies. (But) That is exactly what I should be doing.”

Johar’s last directorial was “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani” in 2023. Besides directing, Johar also hosts the celebrity chat show “Koffee With Karan”.

The IIFA Awards, which returns to Yas Island, Abu Dhabi from September 27 to 29, will also feature performances by Rekha, Shahid Kapoor, Janhvi Kapoor, and Kriti Sanon. Vicky Kaushal will join Shah Rukh and Johar as a host.

Shah Rukh, who is returning to host the IIFA after nearly a decade, expressed his enthusiasm for the event. “IIFA is being hosted all around the world, which makes us very proud.

And more often than not I’ve had to beg them ‘I’m shooting but you are in Vancouver, Toronto, Malaysia, do it (IIFA) here in Borivali or in film city like others do. But their vision is big,” he said.

This year’s IIFA Awards will highlight both Hindi and South Indian cinema, including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada films, showcasing the diversity of Indian cinema.

Telugu actor Rana Daggubati, who will host IIFA Utsavam with Teja Sajja, attended the press conference and praised Shah Rukh’s hospitality and support for South cinema.

Rana also thanked Karan Johar for his role in promoting South Indian films in the north.

The press conference was also attended by Siddhant Chaturvedi and Abhishek Banerjee, who will host IIFA Rocks 2024. Shah Rukh congratulated Abhishek on the success of “Stree 2” during the event.
