Hollywood star Tom Cruise says working with Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro G Inarritu on Digger challenged him to continually discover new layers in his character.
Cruise headlines the film as Digger Rockwell, an oil baron whose company's actions trigger an ecological disaster with the potential to spark a nuclear war.
Speaking about developing the character alongside Inarritu, the actor said the role evolved through constant collaboration.
"It's just layers, you're just finding it, and Alejandro G Inarritu always was very deliberate about what he wanted with the character. And he showed me this thing, I was just like, 'Oh, my God, this guy's got cojones,'" Cruise said in a statement.
The actor said finding the film's distinctive tone was an organic process.
"Tone is something that you have to discover. You don't just read it. You've got to feel your way through it. You've got to look at the lens and he's developing it. We just had a lot of fun finding those layers. He and I both together and it just happens," he added.
Digger is billed as an original comedy with disaster elements from the Birdman and The Revenant filmmaker.
The film also stars Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons. Robert John Burke, Emma D'Arcy, Burn Gorman and Sophie Wilde round out the cast.
Shot entirely in VistaVision, Digger is scheduled to release in cinemas and IMAX across India on October 2.
Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute the film in the country.
