American couple ties the knot in Varanasi temple, embracing ancient Hindu traditions

An American couple from Los Angeles traveled thousands of miles to India to solemnize their marriage in one of Hinduism’s most sacred cities, choosing an ancient temple in Varanasi for a traditional wedding rooted in Sanatan Dharma as covered by ETV Bharat.

Jason Matzner and Lauren Kozak were married Saturday at the historic Gauri Kedareshwar Temple in Kashi, as Varanasi is also known. Surrounded by Vedic chants, temple bells, and a small gathering of devotees and locals, the couple followed age-old Hindu rituals in a ceremony that blended spirituality, tradition, and personal devotion.

The wedding was organized with the help of local temple priest Pandit Anurag Mishra and Kunal Rakshit, founder of Varanasi Experience, who assisted in coordinating the rituals and arrangements. Inside the temple premises, Jason and Lauren exchanged garlands during the varmala ceremony, circled the sacred fire during the pheras, and made vows in accordance with Hindu customs.

For Jason, the ceremony marked the culmination of a spiritual connection that began in childhood. He said his first visit to India was with his parents, an experience that sparked a deep interest in Indian philosophy, spirituality, and Sanatan traditions. Now on his fourth trip to India and second visit to Varanasi, Jason said he was moved by the city’s transformation and development while retaining its ancient spiritual essence.

“Indian culture feels like a mystery,” Jason said after the ceremony. “The deeper we go, the more it opens itself to us.”

Lauren, visiting India for the first time, said the experience exceeded her expectations. She described being touched by the warmth of the people, the spiritual atmosphere of Kashi, and the emotional depth of the rituals. During the ceremony, both became visibly emotional, particularly during the varmala, reflecting their reverence for the traditions they were embracing.

Professionally, Jason is a guitar artist, while Lauren works as a marketing executive. Despite their different careers, both share a strong interest in Hindu spirituality. Jason is devoted to Lord Ganesha, while Lauren holds a deep faith in Lord Shiva and has a tattoo of Nataraja on her hand symbolizing that connection.

Following the wedding, the couple performed a Rudrabhishek ritual in Varanasi to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings. They plan to continue their journey in India with a visit to Agra.

Their marriage stands as a striking example of the growing global interest in Indian culture and spirituality, underscoring how ancient traditions continue to resonate far beyond India’s borders.
