Delhi most rape, murder-prone Indian metro in 2020: Govt

INDIA’S capital Delhi accounted for almost 40 per cent of all rape cases and almost 25 per cent murder cases among 19 metropolitan cities in India last year, latest government data have shown.

In all, 2,533 rape cases and 1,849 murder cases were reported across India in 2020, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data revealed.

The NCRB, which works under India’s home ministry, classified 19 cities with more than 20 lakh population as metropolitans and they are Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Ghaziabad, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kanpur, Kochi, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Pune and Surat.

When it comes to rape cases, Delhi reported 967 cases of the 2,533 cases reported countrywide, making it the worst-faring city. Jaipur (409) and Mumbai (322) followed next.

Of the victims in the 2,533 rape cases, 2,448 were aged above 18 while the remaining were minor, the NCRB, which collects and analyses crime data as defined by the Indian Penal Code and special and local laws in the country, said.

In terms of crimes against women, 35,331 cases were registered in all during 2020, showing a fall of 21.1 per cent over 2019 (44,783 cases), the annual crime report said.

The majority of the crimes were registered under ‘cruelty by husband or his relatives’ (30.2 per cent) followed by ‘assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty’ (19.7 per cent), ‘kidnapping and abduction of women’ (19 per cent) and ‘rape’ (7.2 per cent), the data added.

Delhi topped table in murders as well

Delhi registered the most murders (461 or 24 per cent of 1,849) in 2020 followed by cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai and Surat. Kolkata reported 53 cases, the data showed.

The figure of 1,849 murders registered in 2020 showed a fall of 8.3 per cent over that registered in 2019 (2,017 cases). The crime rate registered also showed a decrease of 1.8 per cent in 2019 to 1.6 per cent in 2020, the NCRB data added.

Besides, 192 cases of ‘culpable homicide not amounting to murder’ were registered across the metropolitans and Delhi alone accounted for 57 of these cases, followed by Lucknow (28) and Bangalore (10), the bureau data showed.
