IN a bizarre turn of events, a Delta Airlines flight heading to Detroit from Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, was forced to return nearly an hour after taking off after an infestation by maggots was discovered in an overhead luggage compartment.

A passenger told Dutch news agency ANP that “around 10 maggots” fell on a woman who was sitting next to him during the long-haul flight.

“I noticed the woman was doing something. It turned out she was removing maggots from her seat with a tissue. When she saw me looking she said maggots were dropping down from the overhead compartment. She was quite upset,” the man was quoted by the ANP as saying.

When the cabin staff members inspected the matter, they found that a bag containing rotten fish was the source of the maggots. The passenger cited above said a dozen or so maggots fell on the woman and the unoccupied chair between them when the compartment was opened.

Seeing the situation, some other passengers on board the flight also inspected their respective seats for maggots.

One passenger told Sky News that she had told the flight attendants about an “absolutely odd odour” in the flight.

Another one told DailyMail.com that the owner of the bag was held behind after other passengers exited the airport upon its landing.

The passengers were reportedly given air miles, hotel room compensation and food vouchers. The airline confirmed the presence of a bag of rotten fish on the aircraft and the maggots and apologised to the passengers, The Standard said in a report.

The aircraft was taken for deep cleaning once it returned to Schiphol.
